During World War II, the castle of Werneck was also used since 1943 by the "Luftwaffe" (German Air Force) as a school for training non-commissioned officers. In May 2011, former students of this school held a veterans` meeting there, honoring their comrades who had died in the war. A report of this meeting was published in the local newspaper "Mainpost".
On October 14, 1943, "Black Thursday", the US Air Force raided the nearby city of Schweinfurt in a bomb attack. Schweinfurt was the location of a production site of ball bearings, which were of military importance. The air raid affected also the school for non-commissioned officers at Werneck castle. The school`s diary contains a report of this; an English translation is attached.
The German painter Fritz Preiss created an oil painting of the Werneck castle (below).
